My fellow brothers and sisters,

I write this letter to you concerning a very important matter. As you know in the next year and a half, this country will be heading towards the primary and general elections that could have ramifications for years to come. Who gets elected and who does not can mean everything to us in the labor movement. AFSCME needs your help.

The answer as to how do we make sure the right candidates get elected is two fold. Over the next few months the leaders of this union on the local, state and national level will be making decisions on the candidates. These decisions will be based on their labor stances now, in the past and their promises for the future. Once the candidates are chosen it will mean the start of phone banks, mailings, door to door distribution of materials and many other proven methods of successful elections. I ask now that when asked to help with these tasks that you step forward and assist in any way that you can. Remember that we have the ability to elect our employers.

The second portion of the answer is financial. As you and I know all of these steps take a considerable amount of finances to succeed. As most of you know AFSCME has the political action group PEOPLE. I ask that you go to our web site www.afscme2025.org and click on the PEOPLE link. There it will tell you better than I can here what its functions are. The one portion I will bring up here is that it is funded entirely by donations from us the members. It is not a portion of your dues it is separate and voluntary all together.

Enclosed with this letter is the sign up card for PEOPLE. As you can see there are two levels of contribution. The VIP is $2.10 and the MVP is $4.20 per pay period. I ask that all members consider giving to one of these two levels. This will give AFSCME PEOPLE the funds to elect candidates that are friendly to labor. As I stated above this money is used entirely on political actions and elections. For your contribution you will also receive a jacket stating that you are a contributor. This will allow you to show your support and convictions for the advancement of political action within this union.

Please give this issue your utmost consideration. If you decide to contribute, please return your completed forms to your steward or union officer.
